Taisha Teal Wayrynen

B.A., DVATI, CERTIFIED ART THERAPIST

I am a Certified Art Therapist, Artist and a Professional Member of the Canadian Art Therapy Association. I hold a Bachelor of Arts specialized in Psychology and an Art Therapy Diploma from the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute. I am also continuing studies at Emily Carr University as an Artist.

Art gives meaning to our lives and helps us understand our world. It is an essential part of our culture because it allows us to have a deeper understanding of our emotions; it increases our self-awareness, and also allows us to be open to new ideas and experiences. My responsibility as an art therapist is to follow the ethical framework of my profession to help my clients achieve their therapeutic goals. An important element to successful therapy is to build a relationship of trust with my clients.

Art therapy can then become a space in which clients may improve their mental, emotional and physical health while strengthening relationships with themselves and others. Art is a natural way to communicate, a non-verbal language. My mission is to help individuals reach their healing goals through art creation, self-reflection, positive empowerment and healthy behaviors.

I have experience working in the following areas:

Mental illness, substance abuse, attachment disorders, grief and loss, trauma and abuse, anxiety, depression, parental alienation, developmental disabilities, LGBTTQQIAAP, gang affiliation, negative behaviours, self-care, burn out, & creative blocks.

I have found a synergy between art and psychology and I am motivated to help individuals express themselves through art therapy. Creating art in therapy is more about the process rather than the end product.

My Approach

I base my theory on the Humanistic Perspective which is an approach to psychology that emphasizes empathy and stresses the good in human behaviour. This perspective allows the therapist to focus on ways to improve an individuals self- actualization which also improves self-worth. I also base my theory on Positive Psychology which is about accepting the past, being optimistic about the future and enduring a meaningful life in the present moment.

In order to have a meaningful life full of wholeness and happiness, one must develop an optimal well- being. This involves processing positive emotions through meaning and life purpose, achievement though goals and habits, positive character strengths though optimistic thinking skills, relationships with high quality connections and engagement.
